Plant Stem Cell Extracts

In multicellular organisms, stem cells are undifferentiated or partially differentiated cells that can differentiate into various types of cells and proliferate indefinitely to produce more of the same stem cell. They are the earliest type of cell in a cell lineage. Thus, stem cells are simple, unspecialised cells found in animals and plants that have the ability to divide to form cells of the same type. They can also differentiate into a variety of specialised cells. 

Plant stem cells are innately undifferentiated cells located in the meristems of plant. The main meristems are close to the tip of the shoot, and the tip of the root. Meristematic tissues are located in root apical meristem (RAM), shoot apical meristem (SAM), and vascular system (pro) cambium or vascular meristem. They serve as the origin of plant vitality, as they maintain themselves while providing a steady supply of precursor cells (function as a source of new cells) to form differentiated tissues and organs in the plant.

Plant stem cells have a strong antioxidant and anti-inflammatory effect, helping to protect against sun damage and prevent wrinkles. There is also evidence that stem cells can stimulate fibroblasts to synthesise collagen, which, in turn, stimulates skin regeneration and thus make your skin appear more youthful. One of the most important agents which give anti-aging properties to plant stem cell extracts is kinetin (6-furfuryladenine). This compound belongs to a cytokine group and is considered to be a strong antioxidant which protects protein and nucleic acids from oxidation and glycoxidation processes. In 2010, researchers from the Plant Stem Cell Institute published their data in Nature Biotechnology. Their research demonstrated the world’s first cambial meristematic cell (CMS) isolation. CMCs were obtained from cambium tissue in the secondary meristems of plants. These cells are responsible for the production of primary phloem and primary xylem cells within the plant vasculature. Significantly, these cells are innately undifferentiated, and function as plant stem cells.
